In Lightroom, I boosted the luminance of the blue and aqua channels to make the whale stand out. Seahorses — everybody loves them! I always try to capture the shy mood of the creature, but I also try to avoid the strobe shining in its eyes; seahorses are extremely sensitive to light. Because this is a thorny seahorse, my main goal was to get the yellow edge a bit pointy to enhance the charm of this critter. I started by applying contrast to the original photo before adding a plug-in filter called Fractalius.

T he photographers who submitted to Scuba Diving's underwater photo contest blew our judges away, entering what we believe is among the best underwater photos of the year. Even in the 15th year of our Through Your Lens Underwater Photo Contest, we are continually impressed by the talent and creativity of underwater photographers from around the globe. This year, we asked underwater photographers of all skill levels to submit their best work in the following categories: behavior, compact camera, macro and wide-angle. It was tough to narrow it down from the 2, images entered but you will see below that the winners are more than deserving. T he underwater photo contest continues to be one of our favorite issues to produce here at Scuba Diving magazine. With this year's reader photo contest, you've done it again — completely blown us away. For the 14th year, we've asked underwater photographers of all skill levels to submit their best work to the Through Your Lens photography competition, and we marvel at how many beautiful images you all have shared. Pick a photo —any photo — and it could have been a contender; imagine how we felt trying to narrow them down from more than 2, entries to the dozen or so winners you see here. Our contest is divided into four categories — Wide-Angle, Macro, Conceptual and Compact Camera — with an additional grand-prize overall winner.
